What does it mean to lose your life for the gospel?

In his weekly message, Pastor Rich says:

Ultimately, Jesus says we must, to save our lives, lose them. Everything that we want and cling to is lost to us. This isn't a command - this is just the way the world is. The world is such that if we try to cling to anything, we lose it. It dies on the vine. But when we lose our life, we receive it. When we live a life of self-gift, we have everything else. When we follow God's will as Jesus reveals it to us, everything else will be given to us besides. The way of the cross is really the way of life.
